A Mission Beyond Business
Jun 07, 2024Welcome to our special Preview Episode of Hampton's Hustle and Heart. My name is Kim Lenar-Ehrhardt. I'm your host for this new podcast & video series and the founder of the Hamptons BossMoms, a membership-based network for female entrepreneurs in the Hamptons.
Introducing Today's Guest: Joey Wolffer
Today's guest is serial entrepreneur and visionary Joey Wolffer. She's a dedicated mom of two young daughters who inspires us with her passion for making a difference. When I first met Joey years ago, her words of encouragement meant so much to me as a mom-to-be in an unfamiliar place. I'm thrilled to have her as my guest to discuss an important cause dear to both of us.
A Mission Beyond Business
While Joey and I could talk entrepreneurship, today we’re focusing on a mission to spread a vital, lifesaving message without stigma. It’s about ensuring everyone feels comfortable having straightforward conversations that could protect children.
The BeSmart Program
We’ll be discussing the BeSmart program, an initiative promoting safe gun storage, educating kids about firearms, and encouraging responsible gun ownership. As Joey says, it’s about taking politics out of the discussion to save young lives.
"It's about being smart because it is okay to ask. We can make a difference together as moms everywhere."
Safe Storage Statistics
With school shootings and accidental deaths, the alarming statistics speak for themselves. Over 4 million US kids live in homes with unsecured guns. These sobering numbers compelled Joey to take action instead of simply worrying.
Gun Safety Education
Through open communication, we can protect our kids without judgement, controversy or taking away rights. Joey shares her own experience teaching her daughter about gun safety. Hiding from hard truths won't keep children safe. Even simple conversations make a huge difference.
Campaign Launch: #OkayToAsk
On June 10th, we’ll launch the Okay to Ask campaign to normalize asking about gun safety when kids visit other homes. Like seat belts or allergies, these shouldn't be offensive questions. We'll use social media and influencers to spread this vital message.
How to Ask
The Be Smart program gives examples for starting the dialogue:
-
Casually ask if there are firearms and how they are stored, just as you would inquire about allergies or pool fences.
-
Normalize these conversations so everyone feels comfortable.
Taking Action
On June 10th, we’ll unite to spark real change through our collective voices. Here's how you can help spread this potentially lifesaving message:
-
Share the campaign graphic and video on social media
-
Have open discussions with friends and family
-
Encourage others to join this simple yet powerful effort
Conclusion
Though difficult, we must have these talks to protect our children. As Joey urges, “Every single person can do something.” This isn’t political; it’s about safety. Let’s make asking about firearms as routine as asking about allergies. Our communities will be safer for it, one conversation at a time.
